Small is the New Big

Hardwood Artisans, Local Furniture Store, Sees Increased Demand in Space-Saving Furniture with Hide-Away Appeal

WOODBRIDGE, VA – June 16, 2008 – When faced with current economic conditions, living in a smaller space may help reduce costs and increase convenience. Hardwood Artisans, a local furniture manufacturer and retailer, has seen a recent jump in the purchase of Murphy beds, a space-saving solution that is making a comeback.

According to a report by the National Association of Home Builders, 75 percent of baby boomers prefer a smaller home with higher quality products. Murphy beds, a type of wall bed, are an attractive option for baby boomers looking to downsize because they can be tucked away when not in use. Consumers can also request custom designed Murphy bed attachments, which can serve as a bookcase or an armoire.

“At Hardwood Artisans we believe that when people compromise quality for price, they often have to buy the same piece of furniture several times, using unnecessary resources, not to mention paying too much for poor quality,” said Hardwood Artisans General Manager and Owner, Greg Gloor. “We think this is why purchases of our Murphy beds have almost doubled over the last six months, especially among baby boomers looking to make the most out of their space, while being conscious of economic and environmental impact.”

The company’s mission is to make furniture that lasts 70-100 years, the time it takes to grow a tree. Hardwood Artisans recognizes the importance of using wood materials in a responsible manner when creating their timeless furniture.

“Our Murphy beds are durable and classic, allowing customers to retain the beauty in their surroundings despite decreases in space,” said Hardwood Artisans Owner, Mark Gatterdam. “Interestingly the Murphy bed is a concept that was invented in June of 1916, amidst economic times that mirror the current market conditions, including inflation and people looking for ways to save money by living in smaller spaces.”
