Hardwood Artisans and ACTS

Read our press release.

Who are ACTS?

ACTS stands for “Action in the Community Through Service” and is made up of employees and volunteers who want to alleviate hunger, homelessness and domestic violence, and help people achieve self-sufficiency in the Prince William area. ACTS has been in existence for 40 years and faces the challenges of the Prince William area’s evolution from rural to suburban. Among its many hallmarks, ACTS runs Prince William County’s only domestic violence prevention and intervention program, operates a helpline which is staffed by folks trained in suicide prevention, and offers transitional housing to help homeless families become self-sufficient within a two-year period.

What does the ACTS-Hardwood Artisans partnership entail?

When customers purchase furniture with delivery at Hardwood Artisans between now and the end of the year, they will be eligible to participate in the partnership’s furniture drive. When Hardwood Artisans delivers the item(s) of furniture to a customer’s home, the customer will be able to donate their old item(s) of furniture to ACTS. Hardwood Artisans will load the customer’s existing furniture on the truck and take it to ACTS’ thrift stores. The customer will receive a tax deduction receipt and be relieved of disposing of the old item of furniture, ACTS will receive big-ticket items to sell at its thrift stores, thereby raising more funds for the support of its mission, and Hardwood Artisans will enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling of helping folks serve the community.

What is eligible for donation?

Furniture which is not soiled, stained, ripped, broken or missing pieces is eligible for donation. A good rule of thumb is that an item one would give to a friend is in good condition for donation.

Per federal law, we are not allowed to accept used mattresses and pillows, which are considered to be biohazards, as items for donation. However, as per our usual policy, we will remove old mattresses and box springs and take them to the dump at the cost of $40 for a mattress or $80 for a mattress and box spring.

Is there an extra charge for Hardwood Artisans to take away customers’ old furniture and donate it to ACTS?

No, there is no extra charge. Hardwood Artisans will absorb the costs of time and furniture transport.

ACTS sounds like a quality non-profit and I’d like to learn more and perhaps donate in other ways. How can I do that?

For more information about ACTS, including volunteer and donations specifics, please refer to their website, www.actspwc.org.
